"Stick to your day job" is easier to say when the day job is an NHL or NBA player.
Fellow No. 1 overall picks Gavin McKenna and AJ Dybantsa threw out some first pitches at Major League Baseball games on Saturday and, suffice to say, they might want to stick to their chosen lines of work.
A day after hearing his name called at the NHL Draft in Buffalo, the Maple Leafs' McKenna made his way to Toronto to throw out the ceremonial pitch ahead of the Blue Jays' game against the Texas Rangers at Rogers Centre.
Known for his dazzling skills on the ice, puck-carrying ability and playmaking sense, McKenna is one of the best in class at finding teammates.
He struggled to do so on Saturday, however, as his throw to George Springer behind home plate went well wide, and the Blue Jays star had to get out of his crouched position and jump to even grab the ball.
Despite the extra effort Springer had to put in, the Blue Jay still took the time to sign the ball for his fellow Toronto star.
Dybantsa, a native of Brockton, Mass., and the Washington Wizards' No. 1 pick from the NBA Draft earlier this week, made an appearance before his hometown Boston Red Sox took on the New York Yankees at Fenway Park.
Standing at six-foot-nine, comparable to star hurlers like Randy Johnson, Tyler Glasnow or Jacob Misiorowski, Dybantsa was unable to translate his huge frame into appropriate velocity, throwing out a high-arcing pitch akin to a Zack Greinke-esque mid-50-m.p.h. curveball offering.
At least his pitch managed to reach Payton Tolle behind the plate.
If their major-league cups of coffee don't work out, at least they can fall back on being the presumptive faces of their respective franchises in the NHL and NBA.
